Description:Li Fan tells us it’s in Japan that she first knew of NPO. As a postgraduate student in a college of Japan, She accidentally knew there was a recruitment meeting of a NPO, which was held by Nissan in school. With curiosity, She attended the interview and managed to get the position. Working for the organization broadens her horizon and attracts her to the world of NPOs. After graduation, Li Fan became a full member of it, in charge of Internationl Communication, through which she observed the sprouting of China’s NGO and public services. In order to involve herself in more programs about China, Li Fan and Robin Rowland who has the same wish build up Global Links Initiative(GLI).

Cyrille Jegu, the speaker of this lecture, French citizen from Britain, is the Executive Director of TNS Asia, and the Ambassador of UK Energy Saving Trust. Cyrille holds an MBA from Macquarie University (Australia), and has completed post-graduate studies on Sustainable Development at Cambridge University (UK) and Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden).

Low Carbon and Sustainability

JM: Low carbon life is current popular topic in  China. Chinese goverment is begining to carry out Low Carbon pilot cities. What kind of issues shoud be meet in the process throught western experience in sustainable development in your opinion?

Cyrille Jegu: Western governments are facing the same issues as the Chinese government because they have little experience if any, of a low carbon economy. The issue that all industrialised government face is that the infrastructure (transport & energy production) are fossil fuel dependent. One of the advantages that China has over fully industrialised countries, beside it’s government decision making process, is the fact that it’s infrastructure is still growing so it can choose which way it goes.
An other challenge that everyone is facing is to use system thinking to solve complex and interconnected issues simultaneously
Finally, a low carbon economy/life is not just about hardware (infrastructure) it also about software (people)
