“Maddie, greens are little green guardians\u2014eat them and you’ll become a superhero!”<\/p>\n

Mummy would say these things in different ways every day. But Maddie thought carrots tasted odd, and chewing greens felt like munching on a towel. What he loved most were:<\/p>\n

Golden-fried chips,<\/p>\n

Snow-white rice,<\/p>\n

And crunchy snacks that sang “Crunch-crunch”!<\/p>\n

Until Friday evening, when something strange happened…<\/p>\n

“I’m Kang Kang! The Nutrition Fairy from the Kingdom of Health!” Its voice tinkled like a little bell. “Maddy, there’s a great crisis in your Body Kingdom!”<\/p>\n

“Body Kingdom?”<\/p>\n

“Yes! Right inside your body!”<\/p>\n

Kang Kang flew up into the air and waved its little hand. Whoosh\u2014light from the fridge flooded the room, transforming it into a magical scene:<\/p>\n

Maddy saw that inside her body lay a dazzlingly colourful kingdom! There were bubbling juice rivers, crisp bone bridges like biscuits, and a shimmering vitamin forest. A great tree hung with golden berries\u2014but its leaves were wilted, and even the fruit had lost its glow.<\/p>\n

“Those are vitamin berries!” Kang Kang poked Madi’s tummy. \u2018`You’ve hidden the broccoli, so the tree’s starved of nutrients and’s about to fall asleep!”<\/p>\n

Just then, “Rustle-rustle\u2014” a dusty little whirlwind rolled in, swirling with sticky black fur balls! Their bellies clung with unfinished grains of rice as they chattered, “We’re the Leftover Monsters, here to gnaw the tree bare!”<\/p>\n

Kang Kang planted his hands on his hips. \u2018Your picky eating and wastefulness bred these Leftover Monsters and the Dark Army of Malnutrition! They’re gnawing the leaves now. If the tree withers, you’ll fall ill, lose strength, and stop growing!\u2019<\/p>\n

Maddy watched the kingdom grow darker, panic rising in his chest. “What shall I do?”<\/p>\n

“Don’t panic, Maddy!”Kang Kang flew onto his shoulder. “Quickly shout with me: ‘Litter monsters, begone!'”<\/p>\n

Maddy shouted along, but the little monsters weren’t scared at all. They kept crawling towards the big tree.<\/p>\n

“How will you know unless you try?” Kang Kang blinked. “Look, the first warrior can’t wait any longer!”<\/p>\n

Kang Kang pointed to the bread box in the fridge. To Maddie’s astonishment, a slice of wholemeal bread glowed with a warm golden light, revealing a round, smiling face!<\/p>\n

“He’s Fat Grain, the Grain Warrior! He can give you super energy!” Kang Kang exclaimed excitedly. “But he’s trapped\u2014only you can awaken him. Come on, take my hand\u2014”<\/p>\n

Maddy watched the Tree of Life grow dimmer and dimmer, then looked at the expectant smile on the bread. Taking a deep breath, he grasped Kang Kang’s small hand.<\/p>\n

Whoosh\u2014whoosh!<\/p>\n

Maddy felt as though she’d boarded a rainbow slide, twirling round and round through a shimmering tunnel!<\/p>\n

The last sound she heard was Mum’s voice from the kitchen: “Maddy, bring your plate over after dinner, won’t you\u2014”<\/p>\n

When she opened her eyes again, Maddy stood upon a vast, cracked grey wasteland stretching endlessly before her. The sky hung a dull yellow, not a blade of grass beneath his feet. In the distance, the shadow of a vast, withered tree loomed indistinctly.<\/p>\n

“This is… the Energy Wasteland,” Kang Kang whispered from his shoulder. “It should be a golden wheat field, but without energy, it’s become like this.”<\/p>\n

Maddie was parched and exhausted. “Where’s Fat Gugu?”<\/p>\n

“Look over there!”<\/p>\n

In the centre of the wasteland, a round, loaf-like corner protruded from the cracked earth, mostly buried in sand.<\/p>\n

“He’s too weak. He needs ‘precious energy’ to wake up.” Kang Kang looked at Maddie earnestly. “Do you remember the last time you polished off your dinner?”<\/p>\n

Maddie blushed. His supper… had left a few mouthfuls in the bowl…<\/p>\n

Suddenly, a black sandstorm swirled up in the distance! A sinister cackle echoed through the dust as a horde of shadowy figures lunged forward, claws outstretched!<\/p>\n

“Oh no! It’s the Dark Army!\u2019 Kang Kang shouted. “Madi, think fast! That feeling of ‘cherishing food’ when you ate your meal properly\u2014that’s the key to Pang Gugugu!”<\/p>\n

Madi spun around in panic. The shadows drew ever nearer…<\/p>\n

Just then, it struck him: last week, when Dad made fried rice, he hadn’t left a single grain behind! Because Dad had said, “Every grain is hard-earned.”<\/p>\n

The thought flashed through his mind\u2014<\/p>\n

Ding!<\/p>\n

A glowing ring suddenly appeared on Maddie’s finger!<\/p>\n
